The excitement of sport combined with the rigours of science and technology will be on show at the Resources Technology Showcase exhibition next week as robots take over the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The display is part of Curtin University’s First Robotics initiative which engages teams of high school students to work alongside university student mentors and industry professionals to design, plan and build robots.

A Curtin science and engineering spokesperson said solving today’s toughest challenges required more than just technical innovation. First Robotics embraced the necessity that workforces now also needed to be creative, communicative and collaborative.

As well as the high-energy robotic challenge, visitors to the free showcase will also be able to try out the latest virtual reality technologies at the Curtin University booth.

Curtin’s Hub for Immersive Visualisation and eResearch will take members of the public down a virtual operating mine where they will learn the importance of mine safety and how VR technologies can be used to train staff and evaluate hazards.

In conjunction with seismic services company HiSeis, Curtin will also host a virtual reality tour of an underground mine showing drilling and a geological model with seismic data.

And in a collaboration with Alcoa, there will be a virtual walk-through of an area of rehabilitated jarrah forest.

See the First Robotics in PCEC’s Centre Court on November 27 from 11am-12pm, and around the Curtin University booth all afternoon, then all day on November 28.

The free exhibition will be held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
