2025 Cupra Leon Sportstourer will be a hot wagon for Aussie enthusiasts

Cupra Australia will fill the void left by the popular Volkswagen Golf R Wagon with the upcoming Leon Sportstourer – but don’t expect a wide model range like the related hatchback.

Speaking with CarExpert, local head of product and marketing Jeff Shafer said the long-roof Leon due in 2025 will be targeted at enthusiasts.

“I think we’re going to keep the wagon pretty special, pretty premium,” Mr Shafer said. “We’re really focusing that in a particular way… a real enthusiast wagon, sports wagon customer.”

Due around the mid point of 2025 shortly after the facelifted Leon hatchback, the Leon Sportstourer wagon is expected to be offered in Australia with the two flagship powertrains available globally.

Fans of the old Golf R Wagon will love the 245kW/420Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with all-wheel drive, shared with the new Formentor crossover as well as the refreshed VW Golf R and Audi S3. It’ll crack 100km/h from standstill in 4.9 seconds.

Meanwhile, those that want greater efficiency will have the option of the 1.5 TSI e-Hybrid, which features a 200kW/400Nm plug-in hybrid system driving the front wheels, and a claimed EV driving range of over 100 kilometres from the 19.7kWh battery.

Other powertrains offered overseas include a 110kW 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrid petrol, which will come to Australia in the Leon hatch and the Formentor; as well as a 110kW 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder.

Full pricing and specifications for the Australian market are still to be confirmed, but given the indicated powertrain offerings you can expect the Leon Sportstourer to play in the $60,000-$70,000 bracket Down Under.

The Mk8 Volkswagen Golf R Wagon was last sold in Australia for the 2023 model year, and was priced from $71,990 before on-road costs when new. Volkswagen Australia recently made the decision to axe all wagon models from Australia, also spelling the end of the larger Passat Wagon locally.

Competitors for the Leon Sportstourer in Australia will be few and far between, with the related Skoda Octavia RS Wagon offering a 180kW 2.0-litre turbo four and front-wheel drive for just under $60,000.

You could also throw in the Subaru WRX Sportswagon into the mix, which in flagship tS spec is also priced a smidgen under $60,000 and offers 202kW and 350Nm from its 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine with AWD.

Beyond these, you’ll need to step up to premium marques like Audi and BMW for the much more expensive A4 Avant (soon to be replaced by the A5 Avant) and 3 Series Touring.
