New universal access ablutions for members using the Mt Barker Community Recreation Centre will be installed in the coming months.

The Shire of Plantagenet has committed to improving the privacy and accessibility of the recreation centre for local residents.

Currently, the nearest facilities are located at Mt Barker Community College a fair distance from the gym facilities at the centre.

The ablutions have been jointly funded by the shire, the Department of Education and the Federal Government’s local roads and community infrastructure program.

The shire’s works crew has begun levelling the site and the project is expected to be complete by June.

Shire of Plantagenet chief executive Cameron Woods said the bathrooms would fix the issue of gym users needing to use the ablutions at MBCC.

“New ablutions will negate this issue and provide increased accessibility, privacy and convenience to Mt Barker Health and Fitness Centre members,” he said.

“The ability to shower and change before or after work without leaving the 24/7 facility will increase member satisfaction and demand for memberships.

“The Department of Education has agreed to fund 50 per cent of the facility upgrade.

“The recreation centre will continue to evolve to ensure the delivery of quality facilities and programs in the years to come.”
