Owners of a 150-year-old Newcastle pub say they are "just all devastated" after their venue was partially destroyed in a fire.

"You will all of heard of our incredibly sad news," a post on the Burwood Inn's Facebook page said on Tuesday afternoon.

More than 40 firefighters and nine fire trucks were called to the popular establishment in beachside Merewether, after the blaze broke out just after 10am on Tuesday.

"All staff are safe and well, just all devastated. Will let you know more later, but for now, the Burwood Inn is closed until further notice."

Fire and Rescue NSW Acting Superintendent Guy Lightfoot says the fire appears to have taken hold in the pub's kitchen.

The fire quickly spread to the restaurant, bar, beer garden and storage areas, Fire and Rescue NSW said in a statement.

Some 15 people were evacuated before crews contained the fire within 30 minutes, preventing major structural damage and saving the hotel's accommodation.

Acting Supt Lightfoot said no neighbouring properties were damaged.

Members of Newcastle's hospitality community also expressed their condolences to the pub's owners.

"Our hearts go out to our dear friends at the Burwood Inn as they face the aftermath of today's devastating fire," a spokeswoman from the nearby Junction Hotel said in a statement.

"We are deeply saddened by the news and send our heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery."

Images show the pub's charred interior where ceiling panels appear to have collapsed on to the floor.

The pub was previously a popular hangout for members of NRL team Newcastle Knights.

NSW Police are now investigating the cause and circumstances of the incident.
