Chapman Valley and Pumas play off in the men’s and women’s divisions after heat cancellation
After missing their Monday night fixture due to extreme heat, Chapman Valley and Pumas faced off on Thursday night to conclude round 13 in the men’s and women’s divisions.
In the men’s division, the teams competed in a close contest in the first versus third showcase.
Pumas jumped out the blocks and led by six points after the first quarter.
Chapman Valley responded in the second quarter but there was no sign of Pumas backing down. Both teams scored 20 points in the second stanza.
Chapman Valley pulled away during the second half but not without a fight from Pumas.
Chapman Valley’s Elliot Bennett led the way with scoring, chalking up a solid 26 points. Bennett was assisted by teammates Mat Wundenberg and Russell Hurst chipping in with 14 and 13 points respectively.
A strong fight was put up all night by Pumas’ Liam Hunt who finished with 18 points while teammate Riley Fong shot 14 points.
But it wasn’t enough for Pumas with Chapman Valley running out 63-61 winners.
In the women’s division, it was another close contest with Pumas beating Chapman Valley to show they are the real deal heading into finals in 2025.
It was a stalemate in the first quarter with scores tied six apiece heading into the second stanza.
Pumas put their foot down in the second term with Chapman Valley still in reach, going into the main break down one, 27-26.
Chapman Valley clawed back in the third but it was Pumas that ran away with the game in the last quarter.
Pumas’ Millie Gerreyn led the way for her side with an impressive display and finished the night with 14 points.
For Chapman Valley, Libby Shuttlewood and Robin Ugle contributed 10 points each.
Pumas continue their march towards finals, defeating Chapman Valley by five points, 42-37.
