For more than 30 years, the Mid West and Geraldton has been home to the Geraldton Buccaneers men’s basketball team but by 2027 it will also feature a revived women’s team.

The Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association has welcomed the announcement from the NBL1 Commission, given the depth of talent the Mid West showcases during the GABA regular season.

Geraldton Buccaneers general manager Andrew Horstman said the inclusion of a women’s team would provide a great opportunity for young athletes to aspire to reach.

“This decision is so important for the development of young female athletes now,” he said. “For so long now, athletes would look up to the Buccs men’s team and aspire to get there but obviously as a female athlete, there isn’t that same opportunity.

“Now, with the new announcement from the NBL1 Commission, by 2027 female athletes will be given that same opportunity with a pathway to the top, much like the men.”

The GABA have explored the possibility of re-establishing a women’s team in the region but now it will be a reality, bringing elite women’s basketball back to the Mid West region.

The GABA are looking to bolster their administration office to help accommodate the incoming women’s team in 2027.

Horstman said the association was working around the clock to support this opportunity.

“We anticipate needing a squad of around 14 talented female athletes who can compete at this elite level,” he said.

“While the costs are still being determined, we know this will be a significant investment.

“With the right leadership and community support, we believe this is an incredible opportunity to elevate our program.”

The GABA is currently seeking expressions of interest related to roles and leadership opportunities to help make this dream a reality for women’s basketball in the Mid West.
