Darkan’s crutching busy-bee shows community spirit by fundraising for the town bus and helping a local farmer

Darkan’s crutching busy-bee was a class act in community spirit as volunteers helped out a local farmer with his sheep work and raised money for the town bus. Darkan farmers and sports club members gathered at sheep and crop farmer Ian Woodruff’s property for a Friday crutching fundraiser for Darkan’s community bus. The 25 volunteers brought their own equipment to crutch 1700 sheep, raising $2000 before enjoying an evening barbecue and drinks to celebrate. Busy-bee organiser and farmer Cam Buller said it was a great way to raise money for a community asset, help a local farmer and get everybody together. “Without this sort of stuff, the bus doesn’t run,” he said. “It’s a community asset, it transports our sports clubs, it’s a service for events, and locals hire it out.” Twice a year locals get together at busy-bees dedicated to raising money for the bus. “The bus is independently run by three of us blokes,” the farmer said. “It has to go to the pits and service every year. “So these busy-bees are important because they put money into the bank and keep the bus going.” Mr Buller said the busy-bee was a massive success despite the rain because it was rewarding to see locals volunteer their time and work together for something important in their town.
