Last-gasp goal secures Wagin famous victory in UGSHA women’s A-grade grand final over Warriors

A stunning last-quarter goal from Renae Bransby helped Wagin edge past Warriors in a thrilling Upper Great Southern Hockey Association women’s A-grade grand final at Narrogin on Saturday.

Wagin started well with an early penalty corner but were unable to find the back of the net and at the other end Emily Ballantyne emerged to put through the opening goal for Warriors.

It was then Wagin’s turn to score with some great play leading up to a Tracey Price strike as both sides went into the first break locked at 1-1.

The second quarter was an even contest with both teams having some good possession but Wagin looked more dominant towards the end of the quarter.

In the third period the ball went from end to end, however good defending from both teams thwarted any genuine attempt on goal.

In the last quarter the contest ebbed and flowed between ends.

Wagin then snuck a goal as the ball fell to the stick of Bransby who bobbed up to give her side the lead with just five minutes left on the clock.

A Warriors penalty corner with three minutes remaining made for some nervous moments but great defence won out and Wagin were crowned premiers.

The most valuable player medal in the grand final was awarded to Wagin’s Jenna Fleay.
