Mutts compete minus the mud
The inaugural Wagin Mutt Mudders event was hardly a “ruff” race last weekend, with many flocking to participate in the K9 obstacle course with their favourite furry friends.
Held as a part of the Wagin Agriculture Society Gymkhanarama, the event involved dogs and their owners racing through a 4km course with 32 obstacles placed in and around the Wagin Showground.
Wagin Mutt Mudders organiser Paula Carol said the competition was a success but it was missing the mud component due to a recent dry spell.
“The weather was not on our side as we were hoping it would get a little more muddy but everyone still seemed to really enjoy themselves,” she said.
“The aim was just to try and give people an opportunity to get outdoors and have some fun with their dogs.”
About 30 people participated in the competition, with Tyron Heyes coming in first with Champ the German shepherd, completing the course in under 25 minutes.
Grant McGuffie and border collie-kelpie Cia came in second.
Carly Smith and golden retriever Tilly came in third, Kahlia Stephens and Jack Russell Missy came in fourth, and Liza Farkas with her bull terrier Fly finished fifth.
Ms Carol said she would love to do the event again and she hoped the community would get behind it.
“Now we’ve done the first one, we know what works and what people enjoyed, so we’d like to make it more exciting and more challenging for next year,” she said.
