Narrogin Golf Club host successful three-day event Narrogin Cup
The Narrogin Golf Club’s annual Narrogin Cup weekend was held between July 14-16 with more than 100 men and women participating across the three-day event.
The course was in good form, providing players with smooth fairways and challenging pin locations which were noted by the players, some of whom had travelled from as far as Jurien Bay, Augusta and Hyden.
Commencing on the Friday with the Farmers Centre 4BBB Stableford Pairs, the rain didn’t impede nett winners Simon Norsworthy and Simon Gribble of Hyden who combined for a score of 47, with second place going to locals David Grout and Cameron Kett with a score of 46, on a count-back from Narrogin ladies Sue Short and Carol Hardie.
Gross winners were Brett Coxon and Correy Price on 44, with Ryan Sheridan and Ken Adams coming in runners-up, scoring 41.
Saturday brought the beginning of the two-day Carpet Court Narrogin Cup, with the course covered in a layer of frost due to the near-freezing overnight temperatures.
This did not hinder Hyden’s Diane Hughes with a score of 69, nor Denmark’s Fred Knight or local Wayne Palumbo who were tied on 70 at the end of the day’s play.
Sunday brought slightly warmer temperatures and lower nett scores across the field, with Narrogin’s Sam Broad scoring 68, and local Phil Hoskin and Bayden Drew of Jurien Bay tied on 69.
However, they were all chasing debutant Declin Mumby from Cuballing Golf Club who finished the day with an incredible score of 65.
This proved to be the round of the weekend, leading to Mumby taking out the Narrogin Cup with an overall 36-hole score of 141, by one shot from Hoskin coming in second on 142.
Hughes took out the Ladies’ trophy, scoring 142 across the two days, with a seven-shot lead from runner-up Sue Short of Narrogin.
The overall gross winner was local Shane Bolton, who was awarded the Dave Mayfield Memorial Cup for his combined score of 156.
Coming in second place was Narrogin’s Ronny Coppock, four shots behind on 160.
The ladies gross category was dominated by the Katanning Golf Club, with Fiona McCarley finishing in first place, six shots ahead of her clubmate Karan Murray on 168.
Palumbo of Narrogin took out the veteran’s nett trophy with his score of 145 in his first year of eligibility in the category, with Dave Willott winning the seniors division with his score of 144.
A fantastic weekend was had by all, with lots of hard work undertaken by the many volunteers at the Narrogin Golf Club in preparation.
The Narrogin Golf Club thanked kitchen and bar staff, groundskeepers and major sponsors Narrogin Carpet Court and the Farmers Centre for their contributions to such a successful event.
