Narrogin Senior High School students with a creative flair will debut artwork at the Narrogin Exhibition Space for the school’s annual art showcase.

The exhibition’s grand opening on Thursday will give the public a chance to see how the students responded to the theme “Insights” through visual art, photography, animation, graphic design and sculpture mediums.

NSHS photography and design teacher Zoe Quartermaine said the exhibition featured work from Year 7-12 students exploring a range of mediums and subjects.

“Throughout the year, students have experimented with different mediums and techniques to deepen their understanding of the world around them to express their creativity,” she said.

“Upper school students have created art and photography based on their own experiences, allowing them to develop self-awareness and communicate their feelings.

Ms Quartermaine said one of the pieces that stood out to her was a photo series created by Year 11 student Byron Wilmot.

“In his series, Byron explores the experience of depression and how the stigma surrounding the discussions of mental health can be incredibly isolating,” she said.

“Byron’s hope is that with open and positive communication surrounding these issues we can improve the health and wellbeing of our ‘silent south’.”

“It has been fantastic to see how Byron has communicated his experience across a series of three images, each depicting different stages of depression.

“His use of symbolism, photography and editing skills and techniques is excellent and I encourage you to go and experience this photo series in person.”

NSHS visual art teacher Marga Felipe said her Year 10 class focused on themes of preserving the environment.

Examples included Jade Brays’ work ‘Oil Spill’ and Dakota-Marie Turner’s ‘Tropical Paradise’.

People can vote on their favourite artwork from each year group for the people’s choice awards.

The exhibition will run until November 19.
