Parkinson’s support and insights on hand

Parkinson’s WA will be paying Narrogin a visit tomorrow, offering help, support and information to locals living with the condition.

As a part of an outreach service, Parkinson’s WA specialist nurses Liz Bickley and Nerolie Lye are travelling around regional WA to attend local Parkinson’s Support groups.

Ms Bickely said the outreach service enabled people in regional areas to have access to specialised nursing support and an opportunity for at-home clinical assessments.

“We are available to give phone support but we feel it’s hugely beneficial to visit people in person to give them the opportunity to discuss their individual circumstances with a view to enhancing their quality of life,” she said.

“We are also keen to provide education for local health professionals to enable them to be better equipped and informed.”

Parkinson’s WA chief executive Brenda Matthews said the aim of the outreach service was to impart best-practice care and the latest insights into the condition.

“Having two of our experienced Parkinson’s nurse specialists visit Narrogin and the surrounding areas is very important to us,” she said.

“Every day, someone in regional WA is diagnosed with Parkinson’s and we want to ensure that our team can advise of the very best and most appropriate services for a person’s individual circumstances, even when they live outside the metropolitan area.”

Members of the community, particularly those living with Parkinson’s and their carers, family and friends, are encouraged to attend the Parkinson’s Support group, held at the Primary Health building in Narrogin at 10am.
