Shires share $2.8m aged-care grant
The Shires of Wickepin, Kondinin, Cuballing and Corrigin have received a $2.8 million grant from the State Government to expand aged care accommodation.
The project will enable up to 14 new independent-living units to be built in the region, delivered through the Wheatbelt South Aged Housing Alliance.
Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan came to Wickepin on Thursday last week to make the announcement and said the scheme would not only benefit the region’s seniors but also create work opportunities.
“It will support jobs both through the construction phase and afterwards through the health and support services sector,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“The project is a fantastic example of neighbouring local governments working together and with the State Government to deliver the best outcomes for their communities.
“Older people are great contributors to our regions and being able to keep them in the area they know, close to families and friends, helps maintain strong communities and economies.”
The new facilities will help enable local residents to remain in their communities and in appropriate housing.
According to Shire of Wickepin chief executive Mark Hook, the WSAHA applied for the grant in December.
Mr Hook said he was pleased with the announcement and the grant would support the region’s ageing population.
“It was great to finally get the funding after the long time waiting for it,” he said. “The Shire of Wickepin is the lead project manager for the WSAHA, so the money will come to us and we’ll have to manage how and when the rest of the units are constructed.
“At this stage, it looks like we’ll be building four units in Wickepin but we’re still waiting for the final signed grant to see what exactly the $2.8 million covers.”
