Wagin locals have been sewing and knitting up a storm to keep cancer patients around Australia warm.

Wagin CWA and Craft Group members have sewn 12 quilts and more than 20 beanies and scarves for cancer patients across Australia after Northam Comfort Quilts for Cancer reached out to the CWA in April.

Comfort Quilts for Cancer is a WA-based not-for-profit charity of dedicated volunteers who crochet, knit, sew, fundraise and give their creations to cancer patients.

CWA president Joy Kalbuf said it was important to embrace those going through something so hard with a gift that would comfort and support them.

“We’ve got one lady here who received one before we even knew about the charity,” she said.

“While going through chemotherapy, she came home one day and there was a parcel waiting for her.

“She said it was the best thing that she ever had.”

The group’s crafts were displayed in the Wagin Library and Gallery from July 16 to 20 before they were sent to Comfort Quilts charity.

The women will continue to create, help and support Comfort Quilts for Cancer and encourage others to pick up a needle and thread to do the same.
