Wagin’s historic courthouse is set for a new lease on life, with the Shire discussing the building’s future after its disposal by the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage.

The Shire of Wagin was asked by the department if it would like to take ownership of the building, an opportunity it jumped at.

The courthouse was built in 1912 and is listed on the Shire’s municipal heritage inventory. On assessment, the Shire found the building could be used in several ways, including the relocation of the existing library and art gallery.

Other possible uses included a toy library, Wagin Homecare office, history workspace, and an additional visitor information centre.

“The courthouse is historically significant to Wagin, and a very handsome building,” chief executive Bill Atkinson said.

“It’s in a part of the main business district that is currently a bit underutilised, so we feel it could bring some life to that part of the town.”

Mr Atkinson said the project had a long way to go and it could be a year before the transfer of ownership takes place.

“During that time council, along with the wider community will look at options to finalise what the courthouse building will be used for,” he said.
