A HAZMAT alert has been issued in the Peel region after chlorine gas cylinders were dropped along a busy stretch of highway.

The alert was issued about 1pm on Thursday over the “potential” chemical spill along Albany Highway between Jarrahdale Road and North Banister-Wandering Road, near Mount Cooke in the Shire of Wandering.

“A vehicle has dropped cylinders containing chlorine gas along Albany Highway,” The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said.

“There is no direct threat to the community.”

Roads have not been closed however Albany Highway may be shut intermittently as firefighters work to clear the area.

Motorists are asked to exercise caution and follow directions from emergency services personnel on the scene.

As a precaution, people in the area should remain inside, out of the smoke or fumes, with doors and windows closed. Air conditioners should also be switched off.
