Two teens, a boy and a girl, have died in a tragic incident at a popular waterfall spot in Queensland.

In a statement, Queensland Police said emergency services launched a search and rescue mission for the pair around 2.50pm on Sunday.

Queensland Police acting Inspector John Mahoney confirmed the death of the girl at Wappa Falls in the Sunshine Coast region. Her body was found around 3.30pm local time.

“A 17-year-old female who was swimming has got into difficulties,” he told Nine News at the scene.

An acquaintance of the girl, a 17-year-old boy, jumped into the water to help the girl, but also failed to resurface.

“The body of the 17-year-old female has been located a short distance from Wappa Falls this afternoon,” Mr Mahoney said.

At the time, the boy remained missing but his body was later located in the water by police divers, around 7.25pm.

Police will prepare reports for the coroner for both the girl and the boy.

Wappa Falls, which is about 110km north of Brisbane, remains closed at this time as investigations continue.
