Goldfielders wow with reconstructed art as part of National Recycling Week

Goldfielders have been recognised and rewarded for reconstructing everyday rubbish into art and household items. Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban Landcare Group announced the winners of its annual rECOnstructed Art Competition during the recent exhibition opening. Eastern Goldfields Education Support Centre won the high school category for its Precious Plastics, and Norseman District High School’s Year 3 and 4 class won the primary category with Robot City. Samantha Bird and Skye McNaughton both won the junior category with their respective works Sid and Jasper — My Cats, and A Bird of Colour. Carol Campbell won the 3D sculpture category with Fish for Supper. KBULG chief executive Kim Eckert said the exhibition would be open at the Museum of the Goldfields until December 1 and encouraged locals to vote for who they thought should receive the People’s Choice Award. “I feel that each year the pieces of artwork get more creative and I’m sure it would be more difficult to judge because they are of such high quality,” she said. “We saw such great submissions this year for our junior category that we decided to give two awards — junior junior and senior junior.” Held during National Recycling Week, Ms Eckert said the competition and exhibition helped encourage people to think more about how they can reduce, reuse, and recycle. “The message we are trying to get out to the community is to reduce your waste first and if you can’t reduce it first, reuse it,” she said. “This is an example of where people can reuse waste that would ordinarily go in the bin or into landfill and find a good use for it to help preserve our environment.”
