Thrilling conclusion to WA PGA Championship at Kalgoorlie Golf Course, with Buchanan winning on extra holes

This year’s WA PGA Championship has climaxed in a sensational play-off that saw South Australian Jack Buchanan snatch the title on the second extra hole at Kalgoorlie Golf Course on Sunday. Buchanan and WA’s Jordan Doull could not be separated after 72 holes of normal play across four days of the $250,000 City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder tournament, both finishing on 17-under-par 271. Buchanan had started the final day on 11-under, one shot behind Doull, who was co-leader with Victorian Cameron John and Queensland’s Elvis Smylie. Buchanan led the way for almost all of the day on Sunday as the temperature rose to 30C, and carded a final round of six-under 66. But he was left ruing a bogey at the last hole — the par-five 18th — that gave Doull the chance to birdie the final hole and take the title. Ultimately, Doull could not achieve that — and the play-off was set in motion. Smylie finished with a four-under 68 to claim third spot on 16-under (272). The round of the day belonged to Singapore’s Ryan Ang, whose seven-under at one stage had him in the lead, and he finished the tournament in fourth place on 15-under (273), equal with John who carded a final round of three-under. Strong performers on day two, Victorian Tom Power Horan and Lucas Higgins of NSW, finished on 12-under (276) and 11-under (277), respectively, with Power Horan counting the cost of a poor round three on Saturday, when he shot a one-over 73. Another contender at the start of Sunday, Victoria’s Kyle Michel, had a one-over round of 73 to finish on 10-under (278). Similarly, Queensland’s Brett Rankin could not push his case on Sunday, although his final round of three-under meant he finished sixth on 14-under (274). Former winners Jarryd Felton of WA and Dimi Papadatos of NSW both finished on seven-under (281). Last year’s winner, Victorian Ben Eccles, missed the cut for the weekend, as did Kalgoorlie-Boulder amateur Connor Fewkes.
