Thousands flock to first day of LIV Golf event in Adelaide

Thousands of golf fans have flocked to one city dressed head to toe in bright colours to celebrate the inaugural LIV Golf tournament in Australia, with more than 60,000 tickets to the event sold.

The first day of the controversial LIV Golf tournament has kicked off at Grange Golf Course in Adelaide, with thousands gathering to the sold out event in all sorts of creative outfits.

Friends gathered with matching hats, mullets and Hawaiian shirts to celebrate the start of the event.

Golf enthusiast Darren McNamara told NCA NewsWire he had travelled with his mates from Sydney for the event.

“We are in Sydney and in Adelaide for LIV Golf and figured how else could we see golf greats in Australia,” he said.

Golf fans were offered free transport to the golf club, with dedicated shuttles operating throughout the day, as well as free public transport rides for those holding valid tickets.

The crowds bustled their way into the venue – many adorning hats and polo shirts just like their favourite players.

Former AFL Brisbane Lions player Mitch Robinson was spotted at the event, sporting a white party shirt and cap and enjoying the day with mates.

One group enjoyed beverages in their matching Pink outfits.

Aussie golf favourite Cameron Smith, lovingly called the “cashed-up bogan” of the sport, was out and about ready to play.

Fans mimicked Smith’s iconic mullet, after the star met with people in Rundle Mall during the lead up to the event.

Australian golf great and LIV ambassador Greg Norman was spotted meeting fans alongside South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas.

Actress Paulina Gretzky, wife of golf star Dustin Hunter Johnson and daughter of ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, also attended the first day.

The event will run until April 23, with entertainment on the first night headlined by the likes of DJ Fisher, who flew to Adelaide after performing at Coachella in the US on the weekend.

The DJ performed a beloved Aussie tradition, showcasing his “shoey” ability for the masses.

Speaking to media on Friday, Premier Malinauskas said the vibe at The Grange was “electric” as the crowds gathered to watch.

Twelve world-class teams are set to play a The Grange over the weekend, with guests also treated to a range of food and beverage outlets and live music.

General ground pass tickets to the event are sold out, but hospitality packages are still available through their website.
