Luca celebrates being cancer-free with new cubby for Christmas, thanks to Build Now Foundation and Telethon

Luca Kitson’s wish while being treated for cancer was to have a cubby house of his own. And his dream has come true just in time for Christmas. The four-year-old was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma — a cancer that usually begins in one of the adrenal glands — when he was just shy of two. That meant he could not play like other kids while undergoing 18 months of treatment. Now cancer-free, Luca can enjoy his new cubby with twin brother Noah and one-year-old sister Freya. The green cubby was delivered on a crane by Santa thanks to the mammoth effort of Build Now Foundation — a not-for-profit organisation inspired by Telethon to help WA families. The organisation constructed six cubby houses in just six hours over Telethon weekend — with each of them being donated. Luca’s mum Diana Kitson said she was ecstatic that Luca could finally go back to having a normal childhood. “He loves being as independent as he can and we’ve seen him grow up so much in the last year and get his confidence back that he used to have before treatment,” she said. “He loves being in the garden. Luca and his twin are always in the backyard so now we will never be able to get him inside.” The cubby is set to be kitted out with everything that Luca loves — gardening tools and a play kitchen. “It’s the most wonderful Christmas present we could’ve asked for, for all of us to be together at home, living life normally with Luca’s cubby house,” Ms Kitson said. “We are just so grateful to Telethon and what they’d do for families like mine but also for the kids of WA. “We are so grateful to the team at Build Now Foundation. You can see how much it means to the team and how much joy its brought to families like mine thanks to their generosity.”
