Emma Jarvis: When meth is cheaper than booze & its use is on the rise, we need a culture shift

Methamphetamine use, which had decreased during the COVID-19 border closures, is on the rise again in WA. Wastewater analysis from April 2024 indicates a significant increase in methylamphetamine consumption, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, particularly in remote areas where drugs are now sometimes cheaper than alcohol. This trend reflects complex social, economic, and environmental factors rather than mere personal choice. Social determinants of health — such as socioeconomic status, education, employment opportunities, housing stability, and access to healthcare — play a crucial role in influencing health outcomes and exacerbating substance use issues. Remote communities often lack essential services like mental health support and addiction treatment, leaving individuals and families without necessary assistance. Compassion is vital in addressing addiction. Stigma often deters individuals from seeking help. Creating a supportive environment is essential. A cultural shift is needed to view addiction not as a criminal issue but as a public health concern linked to broader life challenges. Community leaders in the Kimberley have say that without adequate resources for drug rehabilitation and support, the difficulties faced by individuals and families are likely to persist. The 2019 WA Sustainable Health Review told us health care must extend beyond hospitals to include primary care and diverse health services. It advocates for partnerships among communities, industries, and government levels to address the myriad factors essential for health and wellbeing. The WA Government has recognised this necessity through initiatives like the Methamphetamine Action Plan, which emphasises collaboration between agencies and community organisations. Harm reduction is a vital framework that acknowledges the realities of drug use while seeking to minimise harmful consequences. Place-based prevention, early intervention, harm reduction and treatment services, such as needle exchange programs and accessible detox and rehab facilities, can create safer environments for those struggling with addiction. The calls from community leaders should serve as a rallying cry for policymakers to invest in comprehensive prevention and treatment initiatives that empower individuals to manage their substance use safely. As we engage in this critical dialogue about addiction and mental health, we must remember that every individual deserves access to compassionate care and responsive support. The urgent pleas from Kimberley community leaders present an opportunity for meaningful change. Addressing methamphetamine use requires more than immediate assistance; it demands a commitment to long-term solutions rooted in empathy and understanding. With concerted efforts from all sectors of society — government, community organisations, healthcare providers — we can foster an environment where individuals struggling with addiction are met with hope and compassion rather than judgment.
