Australia take charge in Dubai SailGP opener
Triple SailGP champions Australia have launched their 2025 campaign with authority, snatching the lead after the opening day of racing in Dubai.
Sporting a striking new livery and with wing trimmer Chris Draper joining the team, the Australians displayed sharp tactical prowess.
Their 3-5-1 race results included a commanding win in the third fleet race, a particularly impressive feat given their past struggles in lighter wind conditions.
New Zealand, led by Peter Burling, overcame crew disruptions after Andy Maloney's move to SailGP newcomers Mubadala Brazil, ending the day in second overall.
Great Britain, helmed by returning SailGP stalwart Dylan Fletcher, finished tied for third with Canada and the United States.
The United States, led by Taylor Canfield, capitalised on a strong start to claim the first race. Race two saw a nail-biting duel between Canada and Mubadala Brazil, with Canada edging their rivals and finishing second. Germany celebrated their second-ever fleet race victory.
Australia's dominance shone in the third fleet race, with a flawlessly timed start that propelled them to Mark One in front.
Despite pressure from Britain and Canada, the Australians extended their lead, crossing the line nearly two minutes ahead of the British team.
In a dramatic finale, Mubadala Brazil surged in the final seconds, overtaking four boats to secure sixth place.
Heading into Sunday's action, Australia top the leaderboard with 24 points, ahead of New Zealand on 23. Britain, Canada, and the United States are tied in third, each with 18 points.
