Son signing rare plus for injury-hit Ange as semi looms
Tottenham Hotspur will be without 10 first-team players ahead of their League Cup semi-final first leg at home to Liverpool, manager Ange Postecoglou has said, with the North London side yearning to end a 16-year trophy drought.
The Australian coach is struggling to raise a fit XI for Wednesday's match (0700 Thursday AEDT) with injuries continuing to mount while James Maddison and Pape Matar Sarr are suspended.
"We get one back and then lose a couple," said Postecoglou whose club signed goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague over the weekend, and hope to recruit further.
"We still need to see if we can help the playing group and the club's working hard on that in a number of areas."
The club have secured South Korean star Son Heung-min until the summer of 2026 after exercising an option to extend their skipper's contract.
That was a rare shaft of light in a difficult second season for the head coach.
Postecoglou's side sit 12th in the top flight following only one win in their last eight fixtures.
However, the Australian appears to retain the support of the club's fans who recognise the effect of the injury crisis and have enjoyed the team's buccaneering style.
Central to that is 32-year-old Son, who has scored 169 goals in 431 appearances since joining Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.
He is 11th on Tottenham's all-time appearance list, while only Harry Kane, Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Smith and Martin Chivers have registered more goals for the club.
Spurs have not won any silverware since they beat Chelsea in the League Cup final in 2008.
"The main ambition is to make sure [Son] finishes his career here with some silverware," Postecoglou added.
