Talia Gibson has prevailed over fellow West Aussie Maddison Inglis in a tense three-setter to win the first of two W75 Perth International titles up for grabs.

A day after the 20 year-old Gibson had teamed up with Inglis to win the doubles crown, the youngster outlasted her more-experienced rival to claim her first Perth title.

The world number 165 came from a set down to secure the prize at the State Tennis Centre, winning 6-7 6-1 6-3.

It completed a strong week for Gibson, who found form after a scare by Alexandra Bozovic earlier in the week.

With Inglis having not dropped a set all tournament, the opening set went for more than an hour as both broke serve twice each, with Inglis ultimately doing enough in the tie-break to take the upper hand.

But Gibson hit back immediately and gained control of the match as she dropped just one of the next seven games to ensure a deciding set was required.

With the scores locked up at 3-3 in the third set, Gibson kept her cool to win the final three games and wrap up the match in two hours and 46 minutes.

Gibson, who lost both singles finals at last year’s Perth International, said she was delighted to finally win a tournament in her hometown.

“It was a really tough match out there today and is always a tough battle playing Maddy,” she said.

“Sticking to my game and playing aggressively worked for me, obviously it was tough out here with the wind today, but I really tried to stick to my strengths and it came off well.”

“It was always going to happen playing singles against Maddy, she’s a great friend and we had a lot of fun in the doubles.

“I was really happy for her to be making the finals of the singles and playing some great tennis.”

The pair will now enjoy a couple of days of rest, before the second tournament starts on Tuesday.
