Peter Sumich: Every West Coast Eagle and Fremantle Docker player rated after horror opening round

WA footy legend Peter Sumich has rated every West Coast and Fremantle player from their round one losses. How did he rate Nat Fyfe and Luke Jackson? What did he make of Oscar Allen’s return? WEST COAST RATINGS 1. Luke Shuey 7: Stood up when it counted and the only one who had leg speed in the midfield. 2. Tim Kelly 6: Seemed off the pace at times but worked into game the longer it went on. Always clean with the footy and his use is elite. Eight contested possessions, four clearances. 3. Jeremy McGovern 6: Under seize most off the game. 10 marks, five contested. Looked in control of his game and used the ball well. 4. Shannon Hurn 6: A typical Shannon Hurn game with marking and kicking in general play. Something he should work on is getting more kicks inside 50 – he needs five to seven, but only had two against North. 5. Oscar Allen 5: Solid game back from 12 months off – two goals, but only one mark inside 50. That needs to be around three to four marks for him to have more impact on the game. 6. Reuben Ginbey 5: He is the future! Solid first up game for a kid. He tried hard with 12 tackles, but only four kicks. He needs to use his left foot more because he can hit targets going forward. 7. Alex Witherden 5: Seemed to handball a lot more (nine kicks, nine handballs.) He is the Eagles’ best kick so must find himself in space more so he can use his kick going forward. 8. Tom Cole 5: Bit rusty but worked into the game, solid first up performance. Only one kick inside 50, he must run and carry the ball more from half back. 9. Liam Ryan 4: In and out of the game – three goals but no defensive pressure. Needs to lead at the ball more so he can get more opportunity for shots on goal. 10. Noah Long 4: First game and was solid for an 18-year-old and will only get better. Two tackles, inside 50 a positive. He definitely has a future. 11. Dom Sheed 4: No leg speed in his game – didn’t spread from the contest. Only three tackles for an inside midfielder. 12. Jamaine Jones 4: Kicked two nice goals but went missing for long periods of the game. Only one tackle inside 50 as a small forward. 13. Jack Darling 3: Again looked like he was going to kick three or four goals with some strong marks but instead finished with one goal and three behinds. Missing easy shots when his team needed a goal. 14. Liam Duggan 3: Has not been himself for the past couple of years. Not using his trusty left foot, only one inside 50 kick, he must attack more. 15. Jamie Cripps 3: Six marks, 13 disposals, all uncontested. He has drifted away from a contested game where he made his name. No contested disposals or marks and only one tackle inside 50. 16. Jayden Hunt 3: Eagles need more from him as a senior player. He was mainly on the wing, 12 disposals, two tackles. 17. Andrew Gaff 3: Gets most of his disposals in the defensive half, he didn’t penetrate the game with his kicking. Only 334m gain average rating. He slows the game down too much. 18. Campbell Chesser 2: I like him, he will get better as he plays more games, he is the future. Only five touches, looked out of sorts at times. 19. Xavier O’Neill 2: He needs more disposals, only eight for the game. 103 minutes of game time with 16 centre bounce down attendances for no clearances. 20. Tom Barrass 2: Took some nice marks in his defensive half but got touched up by Nick Larkey, with a match winning six goals on him. 21. Bailey Williams 2: Simply needs to be more aggressive. Didn’t compete a few times in the ruck and one particular marking contest in North’s goal square that resulted in a Larkey mark and goal. 22. Callum Jamieson 1: Subbed out halfway into the third and had no impact on the game. But I like him because he has a crack and competes all the time, will get better in time. 23. Jack Petruccelle 0: Go back to the WAFL or start to do more. Came on in the third quarter as sub and played 40 minutes on the ground for only one handball. FREMANTLE RATINGS 1. Hayden Young 7: Six rebound 50s, 13 marks and was Fremantle’s best player. He’s become an elite backman. 2. Brennan Cox 7: Fremantle’s second best player. 20 marks and controlled the back half with Young. Used the ball well, 90 percent kicking efficiency. 3. Nathan Wilson 6: Looks like the only back with some run in his legs, had three inside 50 kicks and 405m gained with the footy. 4. Will Brodie 6: Freo’s best midfielder. Five clearances, six tackles, foru inside 50s. He worked hard all over the ground. 5. Alex Pearce 5: Played a solid game down back, controlling the area and defending well. Solid start as captain. 6. Lachie Schultz 5: The best small forward always puts himself in good positions to score. Had two goals and two tackles inside 50. 7. Ethan Hughes 5: Played wing 16 disposals hit the contest hard and gave his all – one player who can hold his head high. 8. Sean Darcy 5: Only five marks, normally gets his 8-10, but dominant in the ruck contest. Four clearances, four kicks inside 50. Had no impact when he pushed forward. 9. Luke Ryan 5: Had 37 touches peeling off his man, taking 12 uncontested marks. Used the ball well but very slow with the ball in hand. 10. Caleb Serong 5: Very busy as usual but only two centre bounce clearances. Had 389m gained with the footy, which is average. Must look to spread forward more to hit the scoreboard. 11. Jordan Clark 4: Had 23 uncontested disposals but only 270m gain. Didn’t run and carry with the footy like he normally does – all credit to the Saints’ team defence. 12. Jaeger O’Meara 4: Six tackles a positive, but only two clearances for a senior mid. Used the ball well but all his football between the ark, no forward 50 or defensive 50 football. 13. Liam Henry 4: Had six score involvements and his two goal assists were very good. Worked hard during the game, but no tackles for a small forward and did not score. Need more focus in these two areas. 14. Sam Switkowski 4: Should have kicked two or three goals but just needs to be a bit more composed with the ball. But overall, he had a crack. 15. Andrew Brayshaw 4: Only two clearances and one centre bounce clearance -- 26 disposals but no influence on the game around the contest. 16. James Aish 3: Played wing, had 18 touches but only 293m gain, which is poor for his standard. Had no run and carry in his game, only two tackles. 17. Heath Chapman 3: Everything for him seemed uncontested – looked shaky at times down back with ball in hand in tight contests. Only two tackles, has a good future and will bounce back. 18. Michael Frederick 3: In and out of the game. Only one goal, one score involvement and no goal assist. Poor effort in these areas for a player with high end leg speed. 19. Luke Jackson 2: No marks inside 50, only two points scored. No impact in the ruck. Not the start he would have liked as the big recruit to Freo. 20. Nat Fyfe 2: Looked out of sorts up forward but kept trying. Only one tackle inside 50 and one mark. Not used in the midfield when the game was up for grabs…? 21. Josh Treacy 1: Three touches for the game. No marks, one tackle. For a key forward, not a game he would want to look at on his Monday vision. 22. Bailey Banfield 1: Played 20 minutes of footy after coming on as the sub in the last quarter. Three touches but no impact on the game. 23. Matt Taberner 1: Got subbed start of the last quarter. No marks inside 50. Had no leading chemistry with Fyfe, Treacy or Jackson as forwards.
