Peter Sumich: Questions remain on whether all West Coast board members decided to keep Simpson

I simply cannot accept that the West Coast board of directors’ decision to keep Adam Simpson as coach was unanimous. That’s what the club want me and many other loyal football followers to believe. A statement from chairman Paul Fitzpatrick on announcing confirmation that Simpson has survived despite leading the club’s football program lamenting in the pits of its worst on-field plight in history, claims it was “unanimous” from his board of directors. Surely at least some members are qualified enough to recognise that such prolonged failing on-field performances was cause for alarm and dissension in a verdict to allow Simpson to continue in charge. How each member voted on Simpson’s security should be disclosed to members. It is an insult to any intelligent football observer and, in particular, Eagles fans and supporters. When I became South Fremantle coach for the 2000 season, the club statement read that it was a “unanimous” board appointment. A fortnight later, one senior South board director told me “I didn’t vote for you” that he had wanted former Fremantle coach Gerard Neesham. He told me “that’s how footy clubs operate” to appear united in board decisions. Simpson launched his backing of the board appointment with missing player exit meetings early in the week, while he was down south. Wellbeing manager Drew Petrie and the line coach of the player conducted those meetings. After such a poor year on-field, I would have thought that the coach would have been there to guide some of these young players into an off-season program. He should be conducting these meetings every year with every player. The decision to continue with Simpson falls on the back of emotional late season wins over fellow cellar-dweller North Melbourne and then the upset over Western Bulldogs. He certainly wasn’t safe after 16 consecutive losses into late July before a home clash with North. Board members cannot possibly have truly analysed the grossly unacceptable 20 losses this season at an average losing margin of 68-points, with five embarrassing thrashings of more than 100 points among 16 defeats in excess of 40-points and just 53 per cent. That’s on the back of a disastrous two-win season last year at an average losing margin of 50 points and percentage of 59.8. West Coast has lost 47 of their last 54 games at an average losing margin of 51.4 points and won just four of the last 29 at home since June of 2021. This board ratification of Simpson and less than mediocrity from his football program seems judged more on emotion than results. Some directors appear to have been swayed in reaction to fans voicing support for the embattled coach in the past fortnight rather than overall performance evaluation. The distinct lack of any apparent development in Eagles young and evolving players and an inability to establish match and training strategies to curb such heavy and ongoing losses, has been ignored by West Coast leaders. It runs much deeper than the horrendous injury attrition that has plagued West Coast for two successive seasons as a result of training and preparation approaches that should be implemented by the senior coach. There is also a conflict of interest with the publicly declared friendship between Simpson and high-profile board member Justin Langer. Just days ahead of a critical vote on whether Simpson stayed or was dismissed, he flagrantly talked of his “support and guidance” from Langer as a close friend and Eagles board member. “He is and always will be a good friend of mine. I respect his leadership and what he’s done for the club and for me personally,” Simpson said in a press conference. I haven’t encountered such conflicts of interest, at all, anywhere else in football. I’m saying these things because faithful West Coast members and supporters should be informed of more that goes on and unfortunately has been going on behind the scenes. While Simpson also said Langer would “make decisions based on what’s best for the club” and not for him, Langer could not possibly have been impartial in his vote to support Simpson continuing. They are just too close as mates to be an unbiased board member with a coach under serious performance review. It is my understanding that Langer and some board members are of the view that Simpson deserves a chance next season with a healthier playing list on the back of two injury-savaged years. All clubs suffer debilitating injury setbacks at various times. But they endure through with good coaching, development of back-up players and playing styles and management to degrees that prevent such heavy losses and certainly not some of the 100-point destructions West Coast has suffered. All too often in those embarrassing defeats, it was more a distinct lack of effort and spirit from Eagles players than playing abilities. It is up to a senior coach to create a healthy playing list with his required standards of expectation and strategies in preparation for conflict at football’s most elite and confronting level. Many of the coach-driven management, training and rehabilitation behaviours should have been more closely scrutinised by football-wise board members before endorsing Simpson to remain. For months heading into this week’s stunning display of faith in Simpson there has been mounting disapproval cries from current West Coast coaching and football support staff as well as players. Some of the Eagles biggest names and most important players in plans for resurgence have not been happy with Simpson’s casual demeanour, training methods and communication. Accusations of the coach not working closely with younger players to provide clear direction for their football and personal development have been rife from inside Lathlain headquarters. I have been inundated with calls and direct approaches from disgruntled former Eagles playing greats and past administrators and coaches venting anguish and concern at what they know that is happening inside the club. These warning bells of disillusion appear to have not made it into board levels of awareness or it has been completely ignored in endorsing Simpson as coach to continue the biggest revival program in West Coast history. Some relationship patchwork will be in order around Simpson and some senior players.
