Racegoers dressed to impress the crowd in bold colours at Ascot’s Fashion in the Field Parade on Saturday.

Dozens of contestants graced the stage in a range of outfits, with Holly Keenan winning over the judges with a yellow floral piece that was masterfully complemented by orange accessories.

Hayley Ursich and Christine Badia were recognised for their efforts on Saturday and were both awarded as runner-up by judges.

There were seven men who entered the competition on Saturday, with Lee Madden taking out men’s first place with a slick pink suit.

But it wasn’t all about the winners at Ascot Racecourse, with 24-year-old Charlie Smith turning heads in a hand-painted bridal dress and stunning handcrafted fascinator.

“It was a bridal dress I got from the op-shop, and I had a vision inspired by an Oscar de la Renta dress to make a floral spring moment to match the theme,” she said.

“So using watercolor, I came up with the design and hand painted the dress. It took me over 12 hours to paint from top to tail... that’s the look.”

The 24-year-old — who made the top 10 — said her headpiece was created using cable ties from “around the house” and a “skinny headband” from an op-shop.

“I fastened those on, use some spray paint, and then used hot glue to add in some beads to create a blossoming little sunset above my head,” she said.

Ms Smith, a sustainable fashion advocate, said she constantly tried to “inspire” the community to dress in a way that empowers them.

“Being a part of an event that is so supportive of Australian fashion, and specifically the fashion community in Western Australia, is not only inspiring, but so empowering,” she said.

“To be around so many women that were happy to race the runway being beautiful in bold colours is a sign that Perth’s fashion community is in a renaissance.”

A Perth Racing spokesperson said the standard of entries this year was “absolutely fabulous”.

“It was fantastic that some of the female contestants had made their own outfits, one was completely recycled and recreated from a basic white transparent dress from an Op Shop!”

“It was also wonderful to see a very chic trouser suit on the runway for what I believe was the first time.”

Judges for Saturday’s event were Seven West Media Editorial Projects Editor Ross McRae, So Perth Editor Jason Balchand, The Secret Skincare co-owner Dr Deb Cohen Jones and Post Vibes influencer Dianne Laurance.
