Peak-hour commuters are being urged to drive with caution as firefighters work to control a bushfire burning close to homes.

A watch and act alert was issued for people in the area bound by Farrington Road, Kwinana Freeway and Murdoch Drive in North Lake after a bushfire erupted around 4pm on Friday.

Around 5.30pm the alert was downgraded to an advice level after firefighters — with the help of aerial support — managed to contain the blaze.

DFES says the fire still remains out of control.

“There is no threat to lives or homes,” the alert states.

“There is a lot of smoke in the area.

“Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes.”

As a result of the fire, smoke is spread across parts of Roe Highway and Kwinana Freeway — with drivers urged to exercise extreme caution in the City of Cockburn area.
