Manypeaks captain Regan Poett hopes his side’s first victory of the 2024-25 Albany and Districts Cricket Association A-grade season is the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Having fielded first just once this A-grade season, Peaks were in fairly unfamiliar territory needing to chase at Turf East on Saturday but overcame a tricky pursuit against Mt Barker to record a four-wicket victory.

After passing the Bulls’ 170-run total six down in the 48th over, Poett welcomed the long-awaited victory but believed they had been trending in the right direction for most of the season.

“It’s good to get that first one on the board and hopefully we can build on it from there,” he said.

“While it was our first win, I think we’ve sort of been building towards it over the last month.

“So hopefully we can just keep building from here and get a few more wins and another one before Christmas would be nice.

“Then we can take that that momentum through into the new year.”

Veteran Ryan Kinnear and Englishman Ben Southern spearheaded Peaks’ brilliant run chase, with the pair combining for a crucial 69-run fourth-wicket stand.

Kinnear anchored the innings with a patient 40 while Southern belted two sixes in his innings of 43.

Poett (16), Seb Stanton (18) and Angus McSweeney (17) all found starts at the top of the order but were unable to turn them into substantial scores.

The Bulls struggled to hit consistent areas bowling 25 wides, but were led well by youngster Max Osborne who finished with figures of 2-36 from 10 overs.

“It was a good chase in the end but something we need to continue to work on,” Poett said.

“There have been times this year where we have batted well and just haven’t been able to get a job done.

“We know we can do it, it’s just probably about being a bit more consistent.

“It was a crucial partnership that, and probably a match-winning partnership.”

After winning the toss and batting, experienced opening Bulls pair Neil Ferreira (34) and Alex Fergie (25) found busy starts at the top of the order.

They made it past 50 without loss before Liam Davies broke the partnership, snaring both in quick succession.

The Bulls continued to tick the scoreboard over before a stunning middle overs spell from veteran Kinnear sparked a batting collapse which saw their opponents lose 6-18.

The leg-spinner took 4-26 in his herculean 10 overs and bowled four maidens as Peaks ripped through the Bulls’ middle order.

However, the Bulls had one last flurry with the bat as Cooper Barlow (21 not out) provided some late hitting with Jarrad Gardner (23) to elevate their side to 9-170.

Davies finished with 3-33 from 10 overs as Peaks’ other main contributor.
